Ahmed Amer received his Ph.D. working with Prof. Darrell Long. His doctoral research included work on the automated grouping of data for placement and mobile applications. Dr. Amer remains a research associate with the SSRC, and serves on the faculty of Computer Engineering at Santa Clara University.

Simson Garfinkel

Simson L. Garfinkel is an Associate Professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, and a fellow at the Center for Research on Computation and Society at Harvard University. Dr. Garfinkel has research interests in computer forensics, the emerging field of usability and security; personal information management; iinformation policy and computer crime; and terrorism.

Richard Golding

Dr. Richard Golding is currently a Research Staff Member at the IBM Almaden Research Center. Previously he was Software Architect with Panasas, developing distributed storage solutions, and a Member of the Technical Staff at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. He is also a Research Fellow at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His research interests-in the odd spare moment-include fault tolerance and scalability in distributed systems, along with storage systems.

Kanchi Gopinath

Prof. K Gopinath is on the faculty at the Indian Institute of Science, and is spending his sabbatical in 2007–08 working with Prof. Long and other researchers at the SSRC.

Dean Hildebrand

Dr. Dean Hildebrand is a Research Staff Member at the IBM Almaden Research Center. He is known for his research on pNFS (distributed access to parallel file systems) and the Panache project on high-performance WAN caching.

Andy Hospodor

Dr. Andy Hospodor has worked for IBM, Quantum (now Maxtor), and Western Digital, among other companies, since receiving his Ph.D. from Santa Clara University. His research interests include interconnection network architectures for storage systems and scalable storage for computational grids.

Mohammed G. Khatib

Mohammed G. Khatib is a fourth-year PhD candidate in computer science at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. His main research interest is energy efficiency of storage systems. He is investigating the use of emerging MEMS-based storage technology and building a hybrid storage hierarchy from disk drives and flash memories. Mohammed visited the SSRC from January through May of 2008, where he worked with Professor Miller on workload-based configuration of MEMS-based storage devices.

Witold Litwin

Witold Litwin is a Professor at Université de Paris 9 (Dauphine) and Director of Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches en Informatique Appliquée (CERIA). He is a Fellow of the ACM (the only one in France), and a world authority of scalable data structures. He is the author of more than 150 publications and has contributed to or edited 11 books.

Jehan-François Pâris

Jehan-François Pâris is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Houston. He spends his sabbaticals at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and is a frequent collaborator. He is the developer of the witness concept for replicated data, is a leader in video transmission protocols, and is now working in file access prediction.

Youjip Won

Prof. Youjip Won is currently an Associate Professor at Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea. Previously, he was with Intel as server performance analyst. His research interests include Storage Systems, Multimedia Networking, Internet Traffic Modeling and Analysis. He is particularly interested in operating system/file system support for massive scale byte-addressable NVRAM, large scale archiving and storage and file system support for multimedia application.

Erez Zadok

Erez Zadok is on the faculty at Stony Brook University, where he is the coordinator of the File Systems and Storage Laboratory (FSL). His research interests include stackable file systems and memory-based file systems. He is working with SSRC faculty on performance analysis and benchmarks for petabyte-scale storage systems.

Robert Dahlgren

Robert Dahlgren is a post-graduate researcher at UCSC, working in the Baskin School of Engineering Photonics Group. Robert is a Senior member of the IEEE and brings a multi-disciplinary background to the SSRC. Robert's undergraduate degree is in EE from Minnesota, and he holds an MS Physics from SJSU, and a second MS in Aeronautics from MIT. Prior employers include Control Data, Sperry, Draper Lab, and Fujikura. Robert has also taught at UC Berkeley and The Exploratorium. His research interests include the physics and characterization of optical data storage, optical devices and systems, particularly the physics and reduction to practice of optical sensors.

Pau Martí

Dr. Pau Martí spent 2003–04 as a Research Fellow at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His interests include real-time systems, control systems and quality of service.

Emilia Rosti

Emilia Rosti is on the faculty at the Università degli Studi di Milano. She spent her sabbatical at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her research interests include computer and network security and system performance evaluation.

Masaru Takahashi

Masaru Takahashi works at the Japan Patent Office (JPO), and is visiting the SSRC in 2007–08. He is working with Prof. Miller on secure archival storage systems and issues in petascale storage systems including reliability and security.
