Seminar: 'Ringer: P2P NFS'

Ian Pye will give a talk entitled Ringer: P2P NFS.

Abstract:

In this talk, we present Ringer. Ringer is a multi-tier peer-to-peer distributed file system. Ringer is designed to scale to large numbers of nodes scattered over a wide geographic distribution. Each node has access to a single global name-space. Ringer is integrated into the local file system in the manor of NFS, and can be mounted and unmounted by a regular user. Ringer consists of a collection of clients, each of which forwards all metadata lookups to a metadata server (MDS). There are numerous metadata servers, up to a one-to-one ratio with clients. Close to open consistency is maintained by using Amazon.com’s S3 service to store a single canonical collection of file descriptors. Also, a system of leases is employed to keep local copies of files consistent.
