Seminar: 'Kamaleon FFS:Design Challenges'

Roberto Pineiro will give a talk titled Kamaleon FFS: Design Challenges.

Abstract:

Stacking up several layers of storage software tailored specifically for hard drives on top of a flash device prevents applications from achieving maximum performance. The Flash Translation Layer speeds up technology adoption, but prevents file systems, cache management policies and I/O schedulers from exploiting characteristics of a raw flash device. The differences in the characteristics of flash devices are significant enough that have motivated the development of file systems specifically for flash devices. However, state-of-the-art file systems designed for flash media is unable to cope with the scalability requirements of massive storage devices. In this talk we explore the challenges faced by file system designers and present some techniques that help to overcome them and how they were applied to Kamaleon FFS.
